Biology


The Biology Department is an integral part of the Science Department in Thornhill College. 

Biology teachers are involved in the delivery of Science at Key Stage 3, the Biology component of the

  • CCEA Double Award (Modular) and Triple Award (Modular) Science at Key Stage 4,

  • CCEA AS and A2 Level Biology (Modular) and

  • AQA A-level Applied Science.

Aims of the Department

The main aims of the Biology Department are:

  • to provide an appreciation and understanding of fundamental biological principles through a scientific study of a representative selection of living organisms;

  • to develop a scientific approach to the solving of problems within the context of planning and conducting of investigation;

  • to develop the skills necessary to work safely with apparatus, biological material and living organisms;

  • to encourage an understanding of technological applications and their ethical, social, economic and environmental implications;

  • to provide a scientific training, either as an end in itself or as a foundation for more advanced study.

Schemes of Assessment

At Key Stage 4 pupils' progress is monitored by:

  • regular standardised homework

  • standardised end of unit tests

A similar scheme of assessment operates at A-level, following CCEA criteria.
