Technology and Design

The Technology and Design curriculum at Thornhill College is centred on providing students with a positive and interesting educational experience in each Key Stage. Students have the opportunity to partake in Technology & Design activities which engage their interests, reflect their level of maturity and experience in the realisation of technological artefacts. Student are provide with the opportunities to experience the sense of satisfaction and enjoyment that comes from design and realisation activities that have been carefully select to ensure a positive experience and the development of technological capability.

KS3 Technology and Design

Currently the subject is taken by all students in Key Stage 3. Beyond Key Stage 3 the subject is optional. The opportunity is offered to all students to study Technology & Design at both GCSE, AS and A level.

Technology and Design activities at Thornhill College provide students with the opportunity to holistically develop their capability. Capability is essentially founded on the skills and knowledge of:

  • communicating,

  • planning,

  • appraising,

  • manufacturing,

  • materials,

  • components,

  • energy & control

GCSE Technology and Design

The course of provides an opportunity to study the theoretical and practical principles of design as well as being the basis for further study of Technology and Design at a more advanced level.

The GCSE in Technology and Design provides for two tiers of entry to enable candidates from a wide ability range to demonstrate achievement.

The course is assessed through a combination of performance:

  • on one externally set examination paper; (40% of final mark)

  • in practical designing and manufacturing coursework (60% of final mark)

 


A-level Technology and Design

This specification builds on the broad Technology & Design experiences gained by candidates who followed the GCSE course.

It provides a solid foundation for study at a higher level in a range of engineering and industrial design areas of practice, or in areas of study related to engineering and design.

A-level Project Work

There is project work which enables candidates to explore areas of the subject which are of particular interest to them.

Project work is assessed and is worth 40% of the AS-level qualification and 35% overall of the A2-level qualification
