Job Description -
Vice Principal of Thornhill College
The Vice Principal reports to the Principal. S/he will work closely with
the Principal in providing core leadership and in managing the strategic
direction and development of the school. S/he will lead by example, will
be fully committed to the promotion of the school’s educational aims,
values and mission, demonstrating initiative, enthusiasm, and
responsibility in the exercise of all duties.
Key Areas for the Vice-Principal are:
1. General
-
To deputise for
the Principal or Vice-Principal when required;
-
To contribute at a
significant level to whole school development planning;
-
To design,
implement, monitor, evaluate and review policies and procedures to
effect school improvement;
-
To participate
fully in Senior Management team meetings, value and support the work
of all members;
-
To keep abreast of
educational initiatives, sharing knowledge and expertise with
others;
-
To take a leading
part in the life of the school, supporting and assisting in the
organisation of all events and activities and ensuring the
presentation of a positive image of the school to the wider
community;
-
To establish
effective links with parents, other schools, outside agencies,
business, industry and the community to support and extend the
educational experience;
-
To share
responsibility for conducting daily Assembly in consultation with
the Principal, Assembly Co-ordinator, Heads of Year and Religious
Education Department
-
To be available
for part of the summer holiday for administration and/or planning as
required.
2. Ethos
-
To set example and
be responsible for discipline with the members of the Senior
Management Team, Heads of School, Heads of Year, Form Teachers and
all other members of staff to promote a culture of self-discipline
and learning and achievement;
-
To be actively
involved in the supervision of students especially in the following
areas:
-
daily
arrival and departure of pupils to and from school;
-
movement
to and from Assembly;
-
movement
between classes;
-
behaviour at break
and lunch-time in all areas of the school;
-
To deal with
pupils who are referred by the Heads of School or Heads of Year for
disciplinary reasons;
-
To deal with
concerns raised by staff, parents, pupils and others.
3. Staff
-
To assist the
Principal in the efficient and effective deployment of staff and
resources;
-
To value and
support the work of all staff members;
-
To promote and
organise Staff Development programmes which will improve educational
provision and standards;
-
To take
responsibility for leading support staff;
-
To co-ordinate the
work of the lunchtime supervisors
4. Pupils
-
To ensure the
pastoral care needs of pupils are addressed through policy and
practice;
-
To create and
maintain an effective partnership with parents in order to improve
pupil achievement and personal development. To oversee the
management of Parents’ Nights. To assist the Principal with the
organisation of the Parent Teacher Association;
-
To support the
SENCO in meeting the needs of the pupils;
-
To organise duty
rotas of staff in order to meet Health and Safety regulations;
-
To assist the work
of the Principal on pupil admissions.
5. Curriculum
-
To demonstrate a
sound knowledge of current educational issues;
-
To review
curriculum provision regularly with the Principal to ensure the
needs of the pupils are appropriately met;
-
To promote extra
curricular programmes in all Key Stages.
6. Teaching and Learning
-
To monitor
standards and promote excellence in Teaching and Learning throughout
the school;
-
To ensure the
learning environment reflects the expectations of standards of
excellence and to check displays and promotion of pupils’ work;
-
To teach a reduced
timetable, set example of good practice and to carry out
professional duties in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of
Employment of Teachers Regulations (1987), as amended September
1994;
-
To monitor pupil
achievement and standards providing data for school improvement.
7. Other Duties
-
To liaise with
General Manager, Personnel Manager, Caretakers and other relevant
staff on general school maintenance, appearance and presentation;
-
To oversee the
implementation of the school’s Health and Safety Policy;
-
To carry out any
other reasonable duties as requested by the Principal.

The
Vice-Principal’s duties are not restricted to 1265 hours and the
carrying out of the above duties will also involve planning and
administration in July and August.

These duties are
subject to change as required in the interest of the school and in
negotiation with the Principal.
