Chemistry

GCSE

In year 11 and 12, all pupils study chemistry. This can be part of CCEA Double Award Science or GCSE Chemistry. Students are provided with detailed work booklets which contain many pupil activities such as scientific investigations, using ICT, problem solving and working as part of a team. Pupils are continually assessed and given regular feedback on their progress.

A-level
In A-level chemistry classes, girls are provided with opportunities for problem solving, using ICT and independent learning activities. Students also have the opportunity to encounter a wide range of practical experiments that are designed to enhance the teaching and learning experience. Each week, A level chemistry students carry out and write up an experiment to develop their laboratory skills and prepare them for practical examinations at AS level and A2 level.

The Chemistry Club

The Chemistry Club provides pupils with the opportunity to extend their learning in the classroom by participating in competitions, quizzes, etc. and to experience a more investigative and fun approach to chemistry. Each year, a group of year 8 students participates in the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry.

In addition, senior pupils have the opportunity to take part in the following activities:

  • Entering competitions such as the Irish Chemistry Olympiad, British Chemistry Olympiad, RSC Schools’ Analyst Competition
  • Visiting local Universities
  • Listening and learning from guest speakers from a range of chemistry related professions
  • Demonstrating their practical abilities to primary 7 pupils on Open night.

Anyone can come along and participate - it's great fun!!
